Biography

Marcia Sotil is a Peruvian Interdisciplinary Artist based in the Bay Area pursuing her Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts in Digital Media Art at San Jose State University. At a young age, she was fascinated by all kinds of art, especially painting, and drawing. As a young adult, her artistic path embraced Modern Dance, Acting, Photography, Voice Acting, Trapeze, Aerial Silks, and Stilt Walking. In the early 2010s, Marcia's emerging passion for the fusion of new technology and Art encouraged her to explore Digital Art.

In 2016, She moved to the United States embarking on a new adventure. In the beginning, her Art path was jeopardized by the adjustment to a new life and family endeavors. Nevertheless, her resilience and her desire to live true to herself kept her focused in her professional goals. As an undergraduate student at San Jose State University, she has been fascinated by Art History, especially French Impressionism, Surrealism. At the same time, she is exposed to New Media, where she creates innovative artworks and dynamic narratives infused with her witty and deep insights. New Media Video Performance Artists such as Hsin-Chien Huang, and Bill Viola are an inspiration in Marcia's individual reflections on humane nature, culture, spirituality, world history, and climate change that have shaped the Anthropocene period.
Some of her works, mainly Spatial and 2D artworks, depict a sharp cultural criticism, inviting the audience to reflect and empower them as game changers.

Artist Statement

My work reflects my desire for self-discovery as a human being and as an artist. It also reveals my fervent wish to keep alive my inner child, being curious and amazed by life, and keeping my mind open to learn new things every day. Art has become the catalyst between the world and my subconscious, unveiling it, and interlacing the physical world and my interior world.
Some of my works are cultural critiques evoking a historical event to activate the collective memory and create a conversation and comparison between the past, the present, and the possible future that people can create and change. I acknowledge the power of art by making people aware, improving their quality of life, and building community sense.

My personal research brought me to investigate New Media Artists, and I felt captivated by Hsin-Chien Huang, who uses video installation, dance, live performances, and real-time motion captures to create performances and virtual worlds that allow the audience to experience and learn from the past to evolve as a society. Bill Viola's artworks resonated in a spiritual magnitude. Viola's depiction of universal themes such as death, transcendence, transfiguration, and other metaphysical themes that gives an elevated perspective of what is real and what is a diversion.

After I obtain my degree in May 2024, my goals are to keep developing my skills in motion graphics, 2D animation, 3D modeling, video Art, performance, voice-over, and my integral development as an artist.
